When your UCard arrives in the mail, you must activate it before you can use any of your benefits. Activation takes only a few minutes and can be done online, by phone, or through the UHC app. This guide walks you through each method so you can get started as quickly as possible.

Before You Activate

Before you begin, make sure you have the following on hand:
  • Your UCard (check the envelope it arrived in)
  • Your date of birth and member ID (printed on the card)
  • Access to the internet, a phone, or the UHC app
Activate your UCard as soon as it arrives — your benefits are waiting but cannot be accessed until the card is active.

Ways to Activate Your UCard

1

Sign in to your member account

Go to uhc.com and sign in to your member account, or create one if you haven’t already.
2

Navigate to your UCard

Go to My Plan > UCard, or look for an Activate Card banner on your dashboard.
3

Enter your card details

Enter the card number printed on the front of your UCard and your date of birth.
4

Confirm your address and activate

Confirm your mailing address and click Activate.
5

Activation complete

You’ll see a confirmation screen. Your card is now active.

After Activation — What to Do Next

1

Check your benefit balances

Sign in to your account to see how much grocery allowance, OTC credit, and other benefits are loaded onto your UCard.
2

Find participating stores

Use the store locator at uhc.com to find grocery and retail locations near you that accept your UCard.
3

Set up direct deposit or reload

Some plans allow rewards dollars to be added directly to your card. Confirm whether your plan offers this feature in your member portal.
4

Keep your card safe

Treat your UCard like a debit card. If it is lost or stolen, call the number on the back immediately to report it and request a replacement.
Do not throw away the envelope your UCard came in — it contains important information about your benefits and first activation instructions.

Troubleshooting Activation Issues

Contact UnitedHealthcare member services at the number listed in your welcome letter. Replacement cards can be requested online through your member portal or by calling member services directly.
Double-check that you’re entering the card number exactly as it appears on the front of your UCard, including any spaces or dashes. If the issue persists after re-entering your details, call member services for assistance.
Benefits may take up to 24 hours to load after your first activation. Check your balance again the following day. If it still shows $0, call member services to confirm your benefit eligibility and loading status.
